Today was the Swiss National
day. We got up before sunrise to take some pictures in the morning
light. After that we had a good breakfast and took off at 7:40. We
first had to descend quite a bit to get back on the Europaweg and
passed the Europahütte after a while. On the trail we called the Hannigalp Restaurant to reserve a room. To our surprise they said we would be the only guests and that they would return to Grächen for the night at 17:30. |
||
Moon about to set behind the Zinalrothorn. The path stays between 2000 and 2600 meters for most of the day. We saw our first chamois when we turned a corner. |
||
View out of the Mattertal.
Towards Grächen the path gets increasingly rocky. Even though the altitude differences were small, it slowed us down a lot.
Over Grächen. Since we intended to stay at the Hannigalp which is further along the TMR than Grächen and also higher (2121m), we decided to bypass the village and save us some climbing, especially since we wanted to arrive in time. |
||
Our shortcut lead us past the Riedglacier with the Nadelhorn in the
background. It then hits an old but still maintained artificial canal
running along the mountain above Grächen which diverts water to
the north (for irrigation?). We arrived at the turnoff to Hannigalp at 16:40 and made it just in time before the hosts left for the day. They showed us the combination for the door and had left dinner and breakfast in a fridge for us. We had the whole place to ourselves! Despite it being the Swiss National Day, we were too tired to stay up and watch the fireworks. In fact, I fell asleep at 19:30 and slept for 10 hours straight. |
